I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 10/23/26 -- We went to the Fall Foliage Walk at Whiteside Garden.  Due to high heat and minimal rain, there's not at much color as usual for this time of year, but some leaves were already turning.  I took some pictures along the way.

EDIT 10/23/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I saw a pair of cardinals at the hopper feeder.

EDIT 10/23/26 -- I watered the new picnic table, purple-and-white garden, and maple garden.

EDIT 10/23/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I saw a fox squirrel at the hopper feeder.

EDIT 10/23/26 -- I watered the telephone pole garden.

EDIT 10/23/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

I'm a newcomer to Dreamwidth and am still getting my footing, but I made a community for Solo TTRPGs - these are tabletop role-playing games that are made for one player, or solo-play rulesets for group play games like D&D and Pathfinder. If you don't have the time for a group ttrpg, solo play games can help scratch that itch. There's a huge variety of game styles and settings, and many are easily accessible via print & play.

We all know the image of Lady Justice with her scales and blindfold, but did you know she's also called Femida or Femeda? I didn't until I was playing a word game and was absolutely stumped!

I finally bought the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows after a long long time meaning to buy it but never finding an actual reasonable price, gladly amazon didn't screw me up this time and the book was imported to brazil safely and it is finally on my tiny evil little hands.

First of all, if you don't know what this book is I seriously recommend taking a look at their site, but to summarize, it's an avant-gardesque piece of literature that is structured like a dictionary but for words that don't really exist and describe niche and hyperspecific feelings that sometimes might look like a fringe and singular experience but that can be related by a lot of people.

Might seem weird at first but that is nothing new, specially with the internet people always making "relatable memes", I saw this lady on tiktok making a video about how being at a party and realizing you are happy now but won't be later kinda prompts you to stop enjoying it that much, which is a feeling described on the book as Kairosclerosis. There's also how the internet seems to have a fascination with liminal spaces that is described by the dictionary as Kenopsia. I still haven't reached the end of it since I'm taking my time reading, and sometimes opening on random pages to read random words, but so far my favorite one has to be the Inerrata, the feeling that even if you could, you wouldn't undo a big mistake in your life, because that would mean you would be living as another person. I'm glad that can be captured in a name, but at the same time, this isn't the first time I've met that concept. It's like seeing a kind stranger on the street and at a later date learning their name and profession, which kinda dismistifies that idealized vision you had of them, oh, wait, thats Aimonomia.

It is a very fascinating read and sadly one that might not be for everyone, still, if it interests you I do think you should read it. This was kinda meant to be a longer post but my brain is pretty fried rn (which shouldn't matter because no one is forcing me to post this at this time but here we are).

I'm glad I got this book since I'm working on a project for my next RPG rulebook that is based on theather play and the relationship between humans and their feelings and ambition. I'm using some of the things described by the dictionary to create specific situations and unique feelings that you derive from your in-game powers, it's looking awesome so far!(im autistic)

On an unrelated note, I made a notion site for a sign up forms for a new minecraft SMP me and my friends are wanting to join, sadly the archetype I wanted was closing just 24 hours before I decided to make my character so I had to rush the fuck out of it. I don't know if I made a good enough job with my character, I hope so, I wish I had more time to think about it.

I'm also having a lot of fun playing Dredge, it's a really cool game, I love fishing and eldritch horrors, the game has both :D I think I'm gonna make a fishing game sometime soon, oh and finish my carrd site which I have been procrastinating for almost a year at this point.

I also uh... got reprimanded by the school staff for walking on the grass with a camera in search of cool worms to take pictures of. I didn't know that was illegal ok chill im sorry dude geez...

Image Hosting

Here are a couple of sites you can use to host your images to display them on Dreamwidth via hotlinking (aka the image is uploaded to that site but appears on whatever site you embedded it on)

(disclaimer: I have not used most of these personally but I have seen them around, or used them for single images I wanted to share real quick)

PostImages

no account needed, free account available for more organisational options and space., and a paid account starting at 15$/month Will give you embed code ready made in a bunch of variations from html to markdown to bbcode.

Flickr

Flickr has been around for ages. There's a free account with limited space, or various tiers of paid accounts. I have no idea what those costs because Flickr won't show it to me. Will also give you embed codes in bbcode and html, with options on how the embed should look.

Edit: Flickr's $11/month or $82/year

imgbb

Similar to PostImages, will give you html and bbcode for your images. No account needed, no free account available but a paid account in various tiers. starting at 14$/month
Edit: apparently there are free accounts (I didn't want to go to all the steps of signing up so I missed that)

SquidgeImages

free fannish image hosting by Squidge - for fans by fans which is really nice. 18+, no commercial use of the images. Images don't need to be fannish to be there.

FileGarden

more a cloud than image hosting but as far as I know (but could not confirm because I haven't signed up), hotlinking is allowed. Also no idea what any of this costs because there's no easy way to find out.

edit:  it's free for the first 2GB (with 40MB maximum per file) after which you have to pay, with the lowest tier being US$2.50/month which increases the capacity to 100GB storage.

dishonorable mention: Imgur made hotlinking against their TOS. The irony is killing me LOL

even more dishonorable mention: ImageShack who used to be free, pivoted to paid account and replaced embedded images from free accounts with advertising. And Photobucket who deleted those images when they went paid account which I guess is better than ads but still.

Name: Solstice

Age: 30s

I mostly post about: Anything that catches my attention long enough, be it various media (music, shows, games, books), hobbies, crafts, current events, or personal life. Also round ups of things I found interesting, and miscellaneous kitchen experiments.

My hobbies are: Reading, journaling, bookbinding, stationery (+fountain pens), tea, art

My fandoms are: They tend to come and go like an ever-turning wheel, but at the moment they are Bleach, The Apothecary Diaries, and Witch Hat Atelier. Although, note that I am the kind of fan who tends to just go heart eyes and throws heart confetti at fics/art/meta instead of posting my own stuff.

I'm looking to meet people who: Are not overly judgmental, appreciate text-heavy posts, and have similar or adjacent interests. I'm open to meeting people who have no shared interests, though! The overlap just makes it easier to talk.

My posting schedule tends to be: Based on how I post on other sites, sporadic. Multiple times a week when something's going down, such as now, when I'm moving from Pillowfort. But more likely long posts around twice or thrice a month, with some micro posts in between.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are:

  • Bigotry, hate speech, and dehumanizing language.
  • Undisclosed AI use.
  • Unlabeled graphic content, be it sexual, violent, or just plain gross. Nothing personal against them, but for these things I'd rather find them intentionally instead of incidentally.
  • Proselytizing, and religious supremism.

Before adding me, you should know:

  • There might be times I'm too tired to English and may post journals in Filipino instead.
  • I am a chronic lurker, and new to Dreamwidth, so I'm figuring out how to do low-energy interactions (such as simply hitting a 'like' or 'heart' to show I appreciate the post/comment, or to show emotional support) without being a bit spammy.
  • I like darker aesthetics and themes in my media, and I might post something like a song with a scary-looking album cover, or look closely at a character who is morally ambiguous or has definitely done something terrible.

Birds are more afraid of women than men. Scientists have no idea why

Scientists have uncovered a strange pattern in urban bird behavior: Across five European countries and 37 species, birds consistently fled sooner when approached by women than men. Researchers have no clear explanation for the difference, raising intriguing questions about how birds recognize and respond to humans.

I instantly want to test this with queer people, crossdressers, other genders, etc.

I've been poking around in original fiction, fanfiction, fanwork, etc. communities and I'm noticing that while there are fanworks spaces for all manner of genres, themes/tropes, time periods, fandoms, etc., there's also some communities that are specifically for a single user's work. I've seen it a few times, usually [user]_writes or something to that effect for the community name.

As a new user to the site, who wants to eventually start posting writing of both the fanwork and fanwork-adjacent (like, fanfiction of my D&D campaigns) variety, is that something I should do? Is there a norm that creative works go in communities, not on personal journals? If something's for a kink meme or fandom event, I assume those would have their own posting guidelines within the host community, but for stuff that I wanted to write and share without prompting, where should that go?

Name:
Veronica

Age:
31, but I'm a ginger so years only count for half.

I mostly post about:
Haven't posted that much yet but I expect to share my worldbuilding and worldbuilding-adjacent thoughts, poetry, personal journaling, crockpot recipes, and a little bit of video game stuff. I was on Pillowfort (RIP) for a few months but I was just sharing bits of art and poetry, I didn't really get into the blogging thing, so I want to try and do a bit more stuff here.

My hobbies are:
Art in many forms, roleplaying, poetry, worldbuilding, anthropology, history. Kinda guns and cars too, but mostly from afar since I can't afford physical hobbies and those two are dominated by toxic men anyway.

My fandoms are:
Not a fandom person, I don't keep up with new releases of anything anyway. I might occasionally share some things related to my Star Wars or Warhammer 40k OCs (and it would be fun to hear about others', especially with WH40k, I fucking love seeing Your Dudes) but that's about it.

I'm looking to meet people who:
Have shared creative interests, similar aesthetic tastes, or a similar lust for worldly knowledge to yap with. I love extremely well-studied authors and artists.

More broadly I'd be down to chat about anything adjacent to my interests or experiences, even if it doesn't make for a long-term friendship. Other chronically ill folks, people who work in uncommon or unorthodox media (calligraphy? typesetting? anomalocaris pin-ups?), students/academics (especially in the social sciences), with the right vibe anything goes.

My posting schedule tends to be:
Sporadic. Multiple posts per month if I'm in a good mood, long hiatuses if I'm in a bad mood. The site is still fresh and new for me so I'll probably be posting very frequently in these first few weeks.

I like commenting on things when I see the opportunity (and can overcome my anxiety which is the harder part lol) but that isn't too common, as I feel like an alien with the "wrong" interests everywhere I go and it puts me on edge in social spaces.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are:
I can't stand lots of things, but DNIs are naive at best. Just don't be a fucking poser or a plagiarist or some shit.

Before adding me, you should know:
Sexual topics may appear on my blog sometimes, though any raunchy images will be behind a cut. Also, my fiction deals with extremely dark subject matter of all types, so I'd advise sensitive folks to steer clear.

Hello ! As I mentionned, I am new here.
I wish to connect with people who dabble with dark themes in fiction, like fanfictions or art, but most specifically with Transformers characters.
How does posting work here ? Is there a "general" place to browse tags of a fandom / theme , aside from communities ?
Are the devs planning on adding a feature where you can share other people's posts/ journal on your profile ?

I appreciate all help, thank you !

Bobwhite quail reveal new clues about how birds survive winter

Wild animals are generally expected to choose habitats that give them the best chance of survival, and wildlife managers often work from that assumption.

Bobwhite quail in Indiana only half lived up to it. The birds bedded down in grasslands and recently cleared ground, and those choices made no measurable difference to their survival. The ones that slept beside thick brush came through the winter in far greater numbers.

We have bobwhite quail here. I'd been hearing them for years but thought it was some other bird with a similar call, because I didn't think the habitat was attractive to quail. One day I actually saw one. Since then, I've been exploring what the attraction factors could be. One is food. They eat insects, seeds, and fruits -- all of which I have -- and hackberry is a favorite, one of my dominant canopy trees. Apparently another is shelter, because my yard has wooded and brushy areas along with mowed lawn and the prairie garden. It is surrounded by monocrop fields. So yeah, I have a remnant population of bobwhite quail that I often hear but have only seen once.

Team Dreamwidth will still be doing everything they can to eliminate any bugs that pop up when the new pages go live site-wide, but they'll get taken care of faster if you can report them before the pages go live.

If you want to familiarize yourself with the upcoming Create Entries page, or just switch over before you get too used to the current version, I have a guide on how to do so over here; it includes a general guide on using said page.
